UPI Failed Payment — What To Do
Money deducted but not credited? UPI transaction declined? Here is what it means and how to resolve it — per RBI and NPCI guidelines.
Common Reasons UPI Payments Fail
Wrong UPI PIN
Entered incorrect UPI PIN. PIN is set by you when you register on UPI — it is NOT your bank ATM PIN (though they may be same).
Daily limit exceeded
You have exceeded the per-day UPI limit set by your bank. Wait until midnight for the limit to reset or use NEFT/RTGS for large amounts.
Beneficiary bank server down
The receiving bank's system is temporarily unavailable. Payment may show as pending and auto-reverse within 24 hours.
Insufficient balance
Account balance is lower than the transaction amount. Check your balance before retrying.
Expired UPI PIN
Your UPI PIN has expired (some banks enforce periodic resets). Reset your PIN in the UPI app.
UPI ID does not exist
The recipient UPI ID (VPA) is incorrect or the account linked to it has been closed. Verify the UPI ID before sending.
Bank mandate exceeded
Exceeded the per-transaction limit set by NPCI (₹1 lakh standard) or your bank's own limit.
Refund Timeline — Per RBI Guidelines
Immediate debit reversal cases (technical decline at beneficiary bank) — RBI mandates reversal within T+1 business day.
For other failed transaction scenarios — maximum T+5 business days per RBI circular on customer protection and unauthorized transactions.

FAQ
Money deducted but not received — what is the refund timeline?
Per RBI guidelines, if money is debited but not credited, the amount must be reversed within T+1 business day for technical declines. If not resolved, raise a dispute via your UPI app or at upi.npci.org.in.
Transaction pending for more than 24 hours?
If a UPI transaction is pending for more than 24 hours, contact your bank customer care. Do NOT retry — it may cause a duplicate debit. The bank can escalate to NPCI on your behalf.
