Frequently Asked Questions on Gold Rates in India

What is the difference between 24 Carat and 22 Carat gold?

24 Carat gold is 99.9% pure gold (999 purity), suitable for investment bars and coins, but too soft for crafting durable jewellery. 22 Carat gold contains 91.6% pure gold (916 purity) alloyed with 8.4% metals like zinc and copper to provide the strength needed for jewellery.

Are IBJA gold rates the same as retail jewellery store prices?

No. IBJA publishes national benchmark bullion rates without GST (3%) and without making charges. Retail jewellers such as Tanishq, Kalyan, or Malabar add making charges (typically 6% to 20%), 3% GST, and transport/local hallmarking charges.

How much GST is applicable when buying gold in India?

In India, a standard GST of 3% is levied on the purchase of physical gold. The 3% GST applies to both the value of the pure gold metal and any making charges applied by the jeweller.

What is a Gold Sovereign (Pavan)?

In Indian bullion trading, 1 Sovereign (also commonly called 1 Pavan, especially in Southern India) is equivalent to exactly 8 grams of gold.

What is 916 Hallmarked Gold?

916 gold signifies 22 Carat gold, meaning 91.6 grams of pure gold per 100 grams of alloy. Hallmarking by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guarantees this purity with a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code.
